Do it now

‘Take an ax to the prison wall.

Escape.

Walk out like someone

suddenly born into color.

Do it now.’

-Rumi

You

May 15, 2008

“Always consider yourself a first-class citizen of the world.  No one deserves better treatment than you.”

-Dad

I was blessed yesterday by Lone Star Grill & Co.   We were wrapping up a live shot when they brought us lunch.  I’ve done news for 10 years and can think of only one other time when someone gave us food.   When we are covering a story or event, it’s unethical to eat and that’s never been a problem for me, but to have someone give us a free meal on the road, what a blessing.  Thanks.

Excuses, Excuses

May 13, 2008

“If you want it bad enough you’ll find a way, if you don’t you’ll find an excuse.”

-Paula White

This is what I heard Pastor Paula saying when I stepped onto the climber this morning.  In my life I want to be healthy and happy.   JMD

Don’t Quit

“Never, never, never, never give up.”

“If you don’t cheat, and you don’t quit, you can only win.”  Unknown

Just Laugh

May 11, 2008

“Laughter has no foreign accent.”

-Paul Lowney

On this Mother’s Day, I’m reminded of all the laughs I’ve shared with my mother and my grandmother.  Laughter is healing.  They say laughing can add 8 years to your life.  My mom is half way across the country and I cried today because I miss her dearly.  My mom has always supported me no matter what.   I love you, Mom.

Gentleman

May 9, 2008

“This is the final test of a gentleman: his respect for those who can be of no possible value to him.”

-William Lyon Phelps

Powerful.  Be kind and nice to everyone.  I saw someone being rude just last night to a young man trying to deliver food.  I had a college professor who told a great story, the point was to know the names of everyone you work with, including the janitors.  Why not?  Recently, I saw a boss tell her employee not to be late in front of customers.  How humiliating.  I saw another boss shame a worker for not getting trash in a certain office.  Again, I heard the entire long conversation.  My heart went out to those workers.  Be nice, as my friend Candida says, God doesn’t like ugly.  JMD

Tell the truth

May 8, 2008

“No legacy is so rich as honesty.”

-William Shakespeare

My mother taught me to always tell the truth.  If there was one thing she hated it was a liar, and she made that very clear.  Mom always knew if someone wasn’t speaking the truth.  When I see lives shattered due to lying, I’m ever grateful I learned the importance of telling the truth.  God says, the truth will set you free.  News people are often called too liberal, or described as pitt bulls or vultures, that’s always bothered me, because more than anything a good journalist is only after the truth.

Not big on luck

May 8, 2008

“The harder you work, the luckier you get.”

-Gary Player

I can honestly say I don’t believe in luck.  I’ve also never liked the phrase, ‘Fake it, ’til you make it.’  I believe in hard work and along the way certainly you will encounter miracle moments and God’s grace.
