Shake what God gave you.

“Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”  John Wooden

Some people don’t understand why I’ve chosen to do TV news for 10 years, why I wrote a book, or why I do stand-up comedy.  It’s me, what else can I say.  I’m comfortable doing these things.  I was born to communicate.  Hear my reports, read my writing, and laugh at my stand-up, along the way I always pray I fulfill God’s will and deliver His message.   Do what comes natural for you.   JMD

Man’s mind

May 3, 2008

“Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.”

Oliver Wendell Holmes

My plan was to go to Texas Tech University and then to Christ for the Nations Bible Institute.  I used to sing and preach as a teenager. At the university I declared psychology as my major; after auditioning to read the news at KTXT radio, I changed my mind. I’ve enjoyed meeting deadlines and getting it right ever since.   JMD

Kind words from a reader

May 3, 2008

I just wanted to tell you that you are an inspiration and have given me a renewed sense of hope. I’ve tried to teach my children that you never know what it is like for someone else, you don’t know their struggles, their hurts, the day to day pain of their life and yet we are so quick to mistreat others as if it is deserved. Being a sexual abuse survivor myself I know firsthand how difficult it can be to function “normally” and looking back see clearly why I “misbehaved” the way I did…if only then I could have recognized but oh what a joy it is to reflect and appreciate the experience now with peace and understanding.  God is always there, always working and I think just as he used experiences and opportunity to bring you along he has used you to help me see past the occasional fog. Thank you for the inspiration.

I pray for your continued success and wish you well in all of your endeavors.

We don’t know

May 3, 2008

“We don’t know one millionth of one percent about anything”

-Thomas Edison

In my line of work I’m required to know a little about everything and a little about alot.   I’ve never worried too much about not knowing enough, the simple rule is to report what you see and hear first-hand.  I’ve found a new form of communication, one I like very much.  Comedy is communication and stand-up comedy is only funny if it is true.   It took me 14 years to finally get up on stage, I pray it doesn’t take another 14 to really free my mind.  JMD

Great poem

Why I love family genealogy

We are the chosen
My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors
To put flesh on their bones and make them live again
To tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve
To me doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but instead
Breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe. All tribes have one
We have been called as it were by our genes
Those who have gone before cry out to us, Tell our story
So, we do
In finding them, we somehow find ourselves
How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count.

How many times have I told the ancestors
You have a wonderful family, you would be proud of us?
How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow
There was love there for me? I cannot say

It goes beyond just documenting facts
It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do?
It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference
And saying I can’t let this happen.

The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh
It goes to doing something about it
It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish
How they contributed to what we are today
It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up
Their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family.

It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation
It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us
That we might be born who we are
That we might remember them. So, we do
With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence
Because we are them and they are us.

So, as a scribe called. I tell the story of my family
It is up to that one called in the next generation
To answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers
And that is what calls those young and old to step up
And put flesh on the bones.
