Laugh at yourself

June 30, 2008

”The love of truth lies at the root of much humor.”

-Robertson Davies

“It’s been a year since I took to the comedy stage, and I’ve discovered that in order for something to truly be funny, it must be true.  The truth is funny, no matter how painful it may be.

I’ve heard once you can laugh at some of the pain in your life, you’re on to something.   JMD

Perseverance

“In the confrontation between the stream and the rock,

the stream always wins - not through strength but by perseverance.”

“Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.”

Press on

June 27, 2008

“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”
Calvin Coolidge
30th president of US (1872 - 1933)

Perseverance- persist despite difficulties

During my internship at KAMC in Lubbock, Texas I remember visiting with Bill Maddox, the station’s star anchorman.

I asked him for just one piece of advice to be successful in TV News. He quickly answered, persevervance.  Just stick with it, don’t give up.

Ten years into the business and it’s as hard as ever.  It’s work, work, work and at times I want to quit, but I will endure.  JMD

Watch what you say

June 27, 2008

“You will soon forget the kind words you say today, but the recipient will cherish them forever.”- Stephanie S.

I make it a point to compliment one person a day.  I make sure it’s sincere and from the heart.

My mother always told me, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”  Needless to say I was a quiet child.

I also got in trouble many times for opening my mouth and inserting my foot.  In my line of work I realize words are powerful, choose and use them carefully. JMD

Laugh

June 27, 2008

“Laughter has no foreign accent.”

-Paul Lowney

I’ve wanted to do standup comedy for as long as I can remember.  I seriously considered it at age 18, but it scared me to death.  Finally, at age 32 I took a course at The Rivercenter Comedy Club and had my first show.  I’ve done standup at least twice a month for a year now and I’m hooked.

My next show is July 12th

8p.m.  $10

Enchilada Warehouse

See you there!

Who you are

June 25, 2008

“You are the same today that you’ll be five years from now except for two things:

the people you meet and the books you read.”

-Mac McMillan

My pastor used to love a phrase he learned from a family member:

“Di me con quien andas, y te diere quien eres.”

(Tell me who you hang out with, and I’ll tell you who you are.)

In other words mind your company and choose your friends carefully.   Some experts preach to surround yourself with other successful people.  JMD

Seriously

June 24, 2008

“Take what you do seriously, but don’t take yourself seriously.”

-Unknown

This is hard for me to do, but after 10 years in News, I’m learning to relax.  I tend to be an anxious and intense person, but I do find time to let my hair down.  JMD

Jobs

June 23, 2008

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

-Confucius

My first job was at Dairy Queen.  On my first day I’m afraid I threw the Dude on the grill.  After 3 years I moved on to Town & Country Food Stores, they promised to pay some of my tuition.

As a teen I volunteered at a hospital, one of the organizers called me when I was 19 and offered me a job at the NICU at UMC.  To this day I love and respect nurses and doctors and such.

While at Texas Tech University I answered an ad for Ginter Eyecare Center.  Dr. Ginter is one of my favorite people.  I also tested skin temperature probes one summer, easy money.

I started teaching group exercise classes at age 20, I quit at 32.  I also became the Manager at one of Michael Nelson’s Healthclubs in Lubbock.

Now, for the job I love, TV News.  I’ve worked at 5 stations in 10 years.  Before my first job I volunteered for three years at KAMC, KLBK, and KTXT.  My first job in 1998 was in Amarillo, since then I’ve moved to Corpus Christi, Lufkin, San Angelo and San Antonio.  My first job paid $6.25.  It’s still hard to make ends meet, but I love what I do.  Being a Reporter is the ultimate form of public service.

On my knees

June 22, 2008

I am too blessed to be stressed!’
The shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance between your knees and the floor. The one who kneels to the Lord can stand up to anything. God’s Love and peace be with you forever!
