Challenges

September 30, 2008

“Challenges are what makes life interesting;
overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.”

-Joshua J. Marine

It seems easy to give up, but hanging on is what makes us stronger.  During these tough times, I find myself grateful I’ve always believed and depended upon a Higher Power.  God is running my ship.  JMD

Failures & Wisdom

September 28, 2008

”We don’t grow unless we take risks. Any successful
company is riddled with failures.”

-James E. Burke

“Wisdom is not a product of schooling, but of the
life-long attempt to acquire it.”

-Albert Einstein

I’m not where I’d like to be at this point in my life, but I believe if I ever get on the wrong train, God will see to it, that the next train is the right train.  I heard this train story from a good friend.   JMD

One Day At A Time

September 28, 2008

“The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.”

-Abraham Lincoln

“We were born to succeed, not to fail.”

-Henry David Thoreau

“You only live one day at a time if you have no future.”

-JMD 1998

That’s one quote I no longer believe in.  For the past ten years I’ve been focused on my career, one day at a time seemed too slow.  I no longer believe that, the present day is all we really have.  Thank God we only have one day at a time, and if we allow Him to be in control, it will be a great day.  JMD

Miracles

September 27, 2008

“Love is the great miracle cure. Loving ourselves
works miracles in our lives.”

-Louise L. Hay

Today is my mother’s 60th Birthday.  Love has always cured our relationship and made it stronger.  As a kid I used to pray Mom could live forever and I worried about her dying before me.  I also worried about loving her or God more or the same.  Happy Birthday MOM!  JMD

The Game

September 26, 2008

“How you respond to the challenge in the second half will determine what you become after the game, whether you are a winner or a loser.”

-Lou Haltz

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.”

-Anatote France

Fate

September 25, 2008

“Men at some time are the masters of their fates.”

-William Shakespeare

“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”

-Epictetus

I believe in self-fulfilled prophesies, what we believe of ourselves, what we speak into our lives, what we allow on our mind, becomes who we are and where we will be in life.  JMD

Bright future

September 24, 2008

“When I look into the future, it’s so
bright it burns my eyes.”

-Oprah Winfrey

I first read this quote about ten years ago, and it has always inspired me.   Oprah actually played a part in getting me my first job in TV News.

I was living in Lubbock, Texas when she was fighting a civil lawsuit in Amarillo.  I also had a good friend working at the CBS affiliate.  Always a big fan of Oprah, I drove to Amarillo and saw Oprah who seemed to look me right in the eye.  It was exciting to be so close to such greatness.  Yes, after all these years, she’s the queen of talk.

I gave my friend my resume tape, she walked it into the News Director of the ABC affiliate, and I had a job the following week.  Oprah won the suit and I landed my first job.  I still have the book, Mad Cow U.S.A. signed by John Stauber on 2-14-98, one of my first stories.  JMD

Pictures

September 23, 2008

“Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously and never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop this picture!”

-Dr. Norman Vincent Peale

I use this little secret in my daily life.  In addition to having a good mental picture of what, I believe if we speak certain things into our lives, they must come to pass.  JMD

Errors

September 22, 2008

“An error doesn’t become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.”

–Orlando A. Battista

In TV News we check facts over and over again.  The goal is to always send out good information.  Of course, as in any business, humans can make honest mistakes.   When errors happen in journalism, a quick response is necessary.  A reporter only has his last story and his credibility.  JMD

Victory & Defeat

September 22, 2008

“Victory is sweetest when you’ve known defeat.”

-Malcolm Forbes

I still have almost every rejection letter from jobs I’ve applied for in TV News.  The letters are in a big notebook and remind me how hard it is to get a job.  I could have given up a long time ago, and things are still difficult, but I’m in this to the end. JMD
