Action

September 21, 2008

“Action is the foundational key to all success.”

-Pablo Picasso

I finally made it to the gym today, for 40 minutes on the treadmill.  For 10 years I worked out almost every day, mostly teaching classes for pay.  Last October, burned out, I turned my back on the gym, now I’m paying the price.  I’m going to try to walk three more times this week.  JMD

Friends

September 21, 2008

“The ideal friendship is between good people,
and people who share the same virtues.
Leading a good life for the sake of friends,
is the utmost of friendship itself.”

-Aristotle

I think we go through life and along the way we pick up a handful of good friends, if we’re lucky.  I can pick up the phone now and call my 4th grade teacher, my first News Director, my two best friends from 5th grade and the woman who gave me my first internship in TV News.

A week ago I lost a good friend.  I met Cindy in Lubbock during college while working at University Medical Center.  I already miss her nice notes.  We just clicked as friends will.  JMD

911

September 20, 2008

“We all have God’s phone number but the
only number we tend to use is 911.  We
only call in an emergency instead of
calling just for daily connection with
God.”

-Mary Manin Morrissey

I imagine with such difficult times many people are returning to church and to God.  It is true we tend to wander if things are going so well.  A true crisis is all I need to get closer to God.  The truth is He wants us in contact with Him all day 24/7.  JMD

Small Boat

September 20, 2008

“Dear God, be good to me.
The sea is so wide and my boat is so small.”

-Sailor’s Prayer

Life can be overwhelming, unless you allow God to lead the day.  God’s will nothing more nothing less, nothing else.

I returned Monday night from Houston, we were covering Hurricane IKE.  I was disappointed not to be able to get onto the Island Saturday morning following the storm, but I have to trust if God wanted me there, He would have cleared the way.  JMD

Failure & Wisdom

September 20, 2008

“In order to succeed, your desire for success
should be greater than your fear of failure.”

-Bill Cosby

“Turn your wounds into wisdom.”

-Oprah Winfrey

I have a comedy show on October 11th, it may end up being my last show for a while.   I’ve done stand-up comedy for a little more than a year, and lately I’ve declined to do 4 shows.

I’ve managed to recover the $600 it cost me to train for my 15 minute show.   I love stand-up comedy, but it is a rough business and I’m not even that deep into it.  Trying to make someone laugh, is work, work, work.

I think between Bill and Oprah, Bill has the toughest job, except Oprah has to behave every second of the day.  JMD

Stars

“When it gets dark enough, you can see the stars.”

-Lee Salk

Work work work

September 18, 2008

“Nothing will work unless you do.”

-Maya Angelou

The 4 D’s

September 17, 2008

“The Four D’s…Desire + Direction + Dedication = Destiny”

-Unknown

I have the desire, sometimes I’m headed in the wrong direction, and my dedication is ebb and flow, but my destiny is in God’s hand.   JMD

Quotes from Helen Keller

September 16, 2008

Excerpted from Great Quotes from Great Leaders

~ What we have once enjoyed we can never lose.
All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.

~ To be blind, but worse is to have eyes and not see.

~ Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes
true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification
but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.

~ Happiness cannot come from without. It must come from within.

~ The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen
or even touched, they must be felt with the heart.

~ Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through
experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened,
vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.

~ We would never learn to be brave and patient,
if there were only joy in the world.

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but
often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see
the one which has been opened for us.
