Optimistic
June 28, 2010
“The essence of optimism is that it takes no account of the present, but it is a source of inspiration, of vitality and hope where others have resigned; it enables a man to hold his head high, to claim the future for himself and not to abandon it to his enemy.”
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Cultural machines
June 27, 2010
“Commercial jazz, soap opera, pulp fiction, comic strips, the movies set the images, mannerisms, standards, and aims of the urban masses. In one way or another, everyone is equal before these cultural machines; like technology itself, the mass media are nearly universal in their incidence and appeal. They are a kind of common denominator, a kind of scheme for pre-scheduled, mass emotions.”
Wright C. Mills, American sociologist (1916-1962)

Happy Father’s Day

The one lesson my dad taught me:
If you’re going to do anything in life, do it right.

Father’s Day
June 18, 2010
Father’s Day without a father
Red roses grow in Heaven, Lord pick a bunch for me.
Place them in my daddy’s arms and tell him they’re from me.
Tell him that I love him and can’t wait to meet him some day.
When he turns to smile, place a kiss upon his cheek and hold him for awhile.
Thinking of him is easy, I seem to do it every day.
And while there is an aching hole in my heart that will never go away,
somehow I know not yet meeting my father is how it was meant to be.
